Hungry thief sentenced to six months in jail
A hungry man who had mugged an expatriate and stolen his mobile phone in order to sell it and buy some food was sentenced in absentia to six months in jail by the Criminal Court yesterday.
Nazumu Adam was sentenced by the Magistrate for stealing the phone from the foreigner.
According to the statement given by Adam during the investigation, he had stolen the phone off a foreigner who was speaking on his phone on Lonuziyaaraiy Magu because he was hungry and needed the money to have something to eat at a hotel. He had then run away and snuck inside the Henveiru Cemetery where he had hidden the phone and had been arrested as he had climbed the wall and jumped down to the other side, the statement further said.
The case had been closed and the sentenced passed in his absentia because the Court had tried to do everything in their power to locate him first, the Magistrate said before passing the sentence.
The Police investigation team that had investigated the case were also present at the trial.
